Nine-year-old Ada’s mother is too embarrassed of Ada’s twisted foot to let her out of their one-bedroom apartment and it isn’t until Ada’s brother, Jamie, is sent to London to escape the World War II that Ada is able to make her escape. There, she and Jamie stay with Susan Smith, a woman with no choice but to take the two children in. This Newberry Honor Book is an excellent tale of love and of finding oneself. This book is great for older children who are hesitant to get into history texts, but love a good adventure!
