Deza is the smartest girl in her class in 1936 Gary, Indiana. She lives with her father, her mother, and her brother Jimmie. The Great Depression has made it difficult for black men to find work, so her father left in search of a job. When the rest of the family goes out in search of him, they end up just outside of Flint, Michigan. Jimmie leaves to pursue a career in music and now it’s just Deza and her mother. They must find a new home and desperately hope to find Deza’s father. This story tells a side to the Great Depression that isn’t often heard as it’s told from the perspective of a young black girl. This Newberry Medal and Coretta Scott King Award winner will tug at your heart strings and keep your kids reading until the last page.
