The Drinking Gourd

Basic Info:

Written by National Geographic Learning. Published by HarperCollins in 1970.

Book Review:

In this level 3 “I Can Read” book, a family of escaped slaves find their way to Deacon Fuller’s house in the hopes of receiving solace. This tale is all about whether or not this family can make it to freedom, or if they’ll be discovered before that’s possible. The Drinking Gourd could be an exceptional way to teach young readers about the realities of slavery without giving them information they just aren’t ready for.

Resources:

The resources found in the post about Unbound could be helpful when teaching this topic to curious young minds.

This offers just a few extra resources to utilize when teaching about the underground railroad.
