Basic info:

Written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Shane W. Evans. Published by Little Brown and Company in 2014.

Book Review:

The Red Pencil is the story of twelve-year-old Amira. She and her family live in a small village in Darfur until one day the Janjaweed attack and change her life as she knows it. Her family ventures to a Refugee camp where she receives a gift that changes her life – a red pencil and a yellow pad of paper. This book highlights what it is like to live in the Darfur area and makes the experiences of immigrants from this area a little bit more real. This book is great for young adult readers whose encounter a lot of immigrants from this area of the world in their day-to-day lives, as they might begin to more fully understand the circumstances behind their immigration.
