Written by Mara Rockliff and illustrated by Hadley Hooper.
Around America to Win the Vote: Two Suffragists, a Kitten, and 10,000 Miles is the story of Nell Richardson and Alice Burke, two suffragettes who drove all around the United States trying to get women the right to vote. This book is whimsical and funny with beautiful illustrations to boot. It is perfect for children in middle elementary school (2nd or 3rd grade) who are learning about American History. This book is excellent because it offers a different perspective on American history that highlights the role that women played in changing their circumstances for themselves.
This offers a few different interviews with Mara Rockliff as well as links to more teaching ideas.
This book could be read as part of a unit on lesser known historical figures. Other books could include stories about people of color making big changes in history as well as other women.
